Brief Requirement for Seafarers

Sailors skilled and understand what is needed if they are going to become sailors, Seafarers must hold special maritime certification to work at sea. We have provided the Help Guide below which outlines the roles of each ranking on the board and minimum entry requirements.

Indostar Management will provide information as broad as possible about the requirements of being a seaman with an Officer’s position, Rating and also requirements for cruise ships according to the position that will work on board.

Indonesia has already established many training centers to obtain certificates needed by seafarers and Indostar has cooperated with existing training centers to make it easier for seafarers to take the certificates.

Captains / Officers / Ratings

By having the position of Captain on board, overall command of the ship and responsible for the safety, efficiency and commercial viability of the ship. Their job is navigation at sea, while at the port they are responsible for cargo operations. Working under the Master are the Chief Officer (Chief Mate), Second Officer (Second Mate), Third Officer (3rd Mate) and Cadet Officer. Officer positions will not work alone but help with other positions, namely positions in the machine section, electrical positions, carpenter positions, plumber positions and also a Capable Seaman or Deckhand Efficient working as a member of an unlicensed deck department. Deck rating is responsible for cleaning, sweeping, destroying rust, polishing, etc. They help in loading and unloading cargo and at the port they help in mooring ships and taking hours at sea. They are also members of the emergency team, saving lives, damage control, and security equipment. 

Due to the Certification requirements  are relevant for working with Bulk Carriers Ships, Tanker Ships, Ro ro  Ships, Ferries , Tugboat , Offshore Ships and all kind of Cruise line ships. However additional qualifications are required in certain ranks. For further details please,  Contact Us.

Guest Services on the Cruise Ships

Certification requirements (all must be valid including those that had previously no expiry date):

  • Travel Documents (Should have a validity period of more than 4 months as long as the contract is determined)
  • STCW Safety training (Basic safety training amanded 2010)
  • Crowd & Crisis Management and Human Behaviour
  • Security Awareness Training (Designated Security Duties training is now increasingly required by certain companies)
  • Yellow Fever (Typhoid Vaccine required by certain companies)
  • Medical Checkup Result (Drug & Stool Test must be included and Following the requirement standard from the company)

Culinary

Of course the most important quality the chef needs to possess is an ability to plan and prepare great meals that people enjoy eating. This includes all meals and appetizers, snacks, and desserts. They should also have excellent organizational skills and if there are other cooks onboard, he or she will also need to have good leadership skills.

In addition to the basic safety knowledge that is required for all crew members, chefs and cooks will also be expected to be knowledgeable of all food safety requirements. The chef should know how to stretch the budget and do a lot within a limited amount of space and equipment and tools.

Here are some of the duties the chef may be asked to perform:

  • Plans the menus for three meals a day while the ship is in use.
  • Prepares food and supply list and budget, making sure budget fits the one set by the captain
  • Ensures that all food will fit in the galley and stay fresh while at sea
  • Supervises other cooks
  • Cooks all meals for everyone on board- crew and passengers

There are other duties that the chef may have to perform, but these are the ones most often required. It will be important to provide quality meals that are also tasty and healthy. Both crew members and passengers will also expect some variety in the menu.

The Galley utility is primarily responsible for the maintenance and maintenance of dish stations in the kitchen. They will wash all pots, pans, silverware, service items and glassware for every meal served on the plane (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Kitchen utilities will also be needed to keep their work stations clean and sanitary as well as assist in public kitchen cleaning projects as assigned by the Executive Chef.

Housekeeping

One of the most visible jobs in the Housekeeping Department is the cabin steward or stewardess. This employee really acts as the host for all of passengers, whether they are the regular passengers or people chartering the ships. Depending on the size of the ship and HK personnel may perform a great deal of the inside work of the ship.

This team focuses on guest satisfaction and comfort, while upholding the high quality standards of service we require. This department is full of seasoned professionals who focus on even the smallest details in order to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and guest service.

Here is a small sampling of some of the typical duties a cabin steward / cabin stewardess performs:

  • Make up beds in the morning, turn them down at night
  • Wash sheets, towels, and other laundry
  • Work with captain and other crew members to plan each day at sea, such as when meals will be served, etc.
  • Arrange flowers
  • Greet passengers and be available to answer questions
  • Clean all interior rooms, including floors
  • Serve beverages at refrigerator and foods will serve at the restaurant or order to receptionist

As mentioned, depending on the size of the ship, all the work is the same, namely serving the best guests and giving an impression that has never been forgotten throughout their lives. The overall goal for people in this position is to ensure that all owners / passengers feel comfortable and meet their needs in this regard.

Hotel Utility personnel specialist will be responsible for overall developing and implementing cleaning processes and programs to ensure consistency and effectiveness of all Public Areas Operations across the entire fleet in Housekeeping division.

Laundry personnel will collect soiled linen for sorting, washing, ironing, dry cleaning, folding, and transferring to designated areas. You will also be responsible for laundering the clothes and uniforms of guests and crew members. Should know how to use cleaning chemicals, and operate equipment and devices properly. Laundry man also report any equipment malfunctions, leaks, or problems to the Laundry Master. If you have laundry field experience or training, and excellent communication skills, you’re the person we want!

  • HACCP Certificate
  • STCW Safety training (Basic safety training amanded 2010)

  • Yellow Fever (Typhoid Vaccine required by certain companies)
  • Medical Checkup Result (Drug & Stool Test must be included and Following the requirement standard from the company)

  • Bosiet Certificate with OPITO approved
  • H2S Certificate with OPITO approved (The client gives H2S training opportunities before crew on board ships)
  • Security Awareness Training
  • Designated Security Duties Training 
  • Crowd & Crisis Management and Human Behaviour (Required by certain companies)
  • Yellow Fever and Typhoid Vaccine
  • Medical Checkup Result (Drug & Stool Test must be included and Following the requirement standard from the company)

Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats

This certificate requirement is not necessarily all companies needed and it is more important that seafarers have this certificate in order to have skills in safety, namely Proficiency in Survival craft and rescue boats. In general the company will hold the training (reminder) on board when the new crew embark the ships.
